ENIGMA

The building morphology is intrinsically connected to the relation that Japan has with tea. The process was developed through models, drawings and construction/material experiences, while recording the evolution of the project.

Project: Tea House

Place: Lisbon - Campo Grande

Using points, lines and plans intertwined with typical feedstock of the region that appreciates a lot teatime (Japan) the form was merged. At first glance, the structure has a complex aspect, disorganized. Taking advantage of the potential capabilities of the material, the form was achieved organically, where even the entrance is special. A second closer look at the building allows the comprehension of the structure, which is composed of three independent blocks connected by a triangle located at the top. Given the similarity present between the teapot and a swan (animal very present in Japan), withdrew from the smooth lines of the swan's wing and stylized using almost a broken geometry. With this in mind, the wing was repeated three times along a vertical axis (centre square of 3mx3m). The parent swan wing flexes protecting the piglets along its body, flexed in the same manner as the three wings that protects people, the structure visitors. The repetition refers to the three elements necessary to make tea (water, tea, fire). Since this space has a special pretext, with a harmony that goes in parallel with its own universe, it was considered that the entry does not make sense if it was conventional. In the relative path of life it´s difficult to achieve moments of harmony when we enjoy only our universe, therefore, merging space built with the entrance proved that the most obvious decision was to difficult the entrance. A special entrance gives access to a special interior. Describing the entrance, we can say that it is narrow and low, with only 50cmx80cm.
